Wick Groats FC - Player of the Year Awards 2009

Wick Groats rounded off the most successful year in their history by celebrating their 2009 treble at their annual player of the year awards which took place at the club's sponsors The Nethercliffe Hotel.

As well as showing off the County League 1st Division Trophy, David Allan Shield  and Wick League trophy the Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year  and Golden Boot awards were presented by manager Stewart Ross.

Mr Consistancy Garry MacGregor was deservedly voted Player of the Year, and in a closely contested ballot Greg Shearer was chosen as the Young Player of the Year.

There was a bit of controversy concerning the Golden Boot; contrary to the un-official count, there were joint winners with Sandy Sutherland (Bones) and new signing Jimmy Budge both tallying up 17 goals.

Chairman Donald Campbell (Smokes) then presented two special awards to honour two of Groats' legends who have hung up their boots and gloves respectively after over 15 years service. Graham Miller (Grumpy) and Greame Miller (Gravy) and were presented with engraved bottles of Old Pultney detailing their years service to the club.

Groats also presented their sponsor with a team photo as a memento of this seasons treble success to the owner of The Nethercliffe, Mervyn.

Photos now up.

Groats completed a memorable season by defeating Castletown 7-1 in the final of the DA Shield. A hatrick from the CAFA player of the year  (Bones) and a double from the CAFA young player of the year (Andy Cumming) along with goals from Jimmy and Del Boy saw off a Castletown in sunny Lybster. Groats beat the Swifts 3-1 tonight to win the league for the first time since 1995. Funky, Sandy Bones and Beezer all hitting the net. Nearest challangers John O' Groats were beaten 5-2 by Halkirk, so the Groats win secures them the league title. This tops a memorable season as Groats are also winners of the Wick league, made the semi-finals of the HAC, and are in the final of the DA Shield.
