Wick Groats v Thurso Pentlands (04-05-09)

After a good start to the county league with two wins from two; Groats looked to continue their run with a visit from the newly promoted from Thurso Pentlands. Groats started fast with short sharp passing looking to catch the young team cold.

1^st Goal - It didn't take long for the home team to make a break through with last years strike duo combining to devastating effect. Craig slotted the ball into Kyle on the edge of the box who spotted Bones making a run in behind and with a flick perfectly to his strike partner he found Bones who side footed into the roof of the net to put Groats 1 up.

2^nd Goal - Funky got Groats 2^nd not long after with an easy tap in after a dangerous corner came right to the back post from Beezer.

3^rd Goal - Groats 3^rd and Bones second came from another corner from Beezer who this time found Gary at the near post with a drilled ping; the midfielder attacked the ball ahead of the defender and was unlucky not to score himself, but luckily for Groats Bones was alert and reacted well to side foot the ball home.

If the truth be told Groats could have been well out of sight at half time if it not for some expert goalkeeping, Groats attacking players causing no end of problems the midfield well on-top and the defence never troubled.

4^th Goal - This time it was Martin who got in on the act, after Groats got in behind and the ball was squared to Martin who had an easy side foot finish.

5^th Goal - Bones's hatrick came with a very easy tap in, with another assist coming from Beezer.

6^th Goal - Although it was Bones who was getting in about the goals it was Martin who scored the goal of the game with a thunder bolt. He picked the ball up out left after some great work from Greg and checked back inside onto his right, everyone could see what he was planning as he touched the ball out in-front of himself and smashed the ball into the top right corner from 25 yards; another screamer from Martin who tends to come up with at least one rocket every year.

7^th Goal - Bones rounded of the rout with a classy side foot at the back post after some more fast foot work down the right from the ever tricky Beezer.

Although the result was more than comfortable it actually didn't tell half the story. Groats could have and probably should have made double figures; but as it is another 3 points, a clean sheet and the confidence of a few goals sets Groats up well for two games against local rivals Rovers in the Highland Amateur and League next week.
