Wick Groats v Wick Rovers (12-05-09)
Very much a feeling of deja-vu for tonight's game with Rovers, not only had the teams just played three days ago, but the way the game panned out was very similar also. As on Saturday Groats dominated most of the possession and created a number of chances.
The game as a whole was somewhat ruined by the length of the grass on the pitch which made it very difficult to keep quality possession. The first half was poor in truth with Groats creating a few half chances but unable to put the ball in the net. The Rovers defence were standing firm, and despite a few shaky moments kept the score at 0-0 until late in the half.
1st Goal - Groats finally got a reward for their pressure and possession with a break through late in the first half. Beezer pinged in a dangerous corner to the back post which was met by Funky who despite the difficult sunlight kept his eye on the ball and directed header past the Rovers defenders into the net.
Groats were unable to add to their lead before the break, but were also comfortable at the back where Rovers rarely threatened.

The second half followed a very similar pattern with Groats creating a number of chances but unable to take them and give themselves that cushion of a few goals. Added to the chances in open play Groats had a number of dangerous corners but never got that bit of luck in-front of goal.
2nd Goal - Groats luck finally changed and they got their second on the counter attack. Groats caught Rovers up field after a rare corner and with the pace of Andrew down the right there was only going to be one outcome. He played a dangerous ball into the area which was only parried by the keeper to Jimmy who simply side footed the ball home.
Groats could have and should have added to their lead with Bones and Beezer passing up really good chances infront of goal. Bones scuffed his effort, and Beezer made too good a contact and skied his shot over the bar, perhaps the grass can play a part in the blame. Towards the end of the game some great battling and dribbling with the ball by the hard working Greg resulted in a penalty; unfortunately for Bones, his luck wasn't in and the keeper guessed the right way.
So 12 from 12 for Groats and next up a difficult trip to Thurso to play Swifts who have started well, and always prove a tough test.
